About Us

In 2000 the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) created the Low Power FM (LPFM)
classification.  LPFM allowed non-profit entities to own FM broadcast stations. These stations are
limited to 100 watts of transmitted power and the antenna height cannot exceed 100 ft. above
average terrain.

In July 2001, entities in Texas were allowed to submit applications to the FCC for licenses.

The Youth Minister of Trinity Baptist Church (TBC) had a vision of TBC owning and operating a
radio station for the area youth and young adults.  He was given permission by TBC to make
application for a license.

On July 26, 2002, TBC was granted a construction permit with 18 months to complete construction
and be on the air. TBC established a Task Force to study feasibility, cost, and programming of a
radio station.  Upon completion of this study,  TBC authorized the funds for the construction and
ongoing expenses. They also provided space in the church for the studio and agreed to place the
antenna on the Bell Tower of the church.  The study recommended targeting teens to age 35 as
the listening audience with Christian Hit Music.  The programming would come from the Christian
Hit Radio Satellite Network (CHRSN).  The station would also provide a means for area churches
and civic entities to promote their events at no cost.

KCYR-LP went on the air at 10:00 a.m. February 2, 2004 with a satellite feed from CHRSN and is
broadcast 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  About this time, application for a permanent license
was submitted to the FCC and subsequently received.

Vehicle radios are able to receive the station northward from Hunt to near Mountain Home on IH
I-10, eastward past Tierra Linda on Hwy 783 down to Wolf Creek on Hwy 16, southward past the
rest stop on I-10 to the west side of Comfort over to Camp Verde on Hwy 173, and westward to
Bear Paw Ranch out Shepard Reese Road.

Although we have reports of greater range, it becomes intermittent and there are probable dead
spots within the range described. One listener is getting a good signal 12 miles away on Hwy 783
with an outside antenna!

In February of 2005, the FCC approved a license renewal application which extends the license to
August 2013.  We praise God for providing us the opportunity to spread His word to the
community of Kerrville, Texas and beyond!
